About this time of year, the regional and world ice skating championships are held which gives me a chance to see what pieces of music get the best reaction from audiences and these I then suggest to my bodybuilding friends.
However, today it suddenly occured to me that just because I find a piece of music that audiences might like, does not mean that it is suitable for posing to (for instance a version of Faure's Pavane was skated to which the audience liked, but is very slow and methodical which for a 90 second posing routine could be very draining). Therefore could I ask when choosing your posing music, what do you go for? Audience Reaction or Music that reflects what you are trying to show?

Because of inability to be able to pose well, I did something a bit different last time out; I chose a song from the then popular movie "300". It contains no words, but it is extremely powerful and moving-to me at least. It's a slow buildup song, and when I step on stage again, I'll be using this same version. I also took on a client who is a professional ballet dancer and explained my situation. I suck at posing, and want to be able to move gracefully. I let her listen to the song, and she came up with an extraordinary series of moves that fit me and my body. Bottom line; it has to move you and be able to tell your story. Hope that helps.
Interesting you ask this - I've started to think about stuff for August.
I have certain songs that I keep going back to that I like. Last year Joe helped me out A LOT in picking out the music and the posing routine (which he is very good at).
I liked the song we landed on and really liked the routine he put together - but there were a few other songs that were a bit more "me" that I keep going back to for this year.
I think you need to go with something you like regardless of what the audience likes - it should be something that is indicadive of your personality and that you feel comfortable with
When I did bodybuilding (I now compete in figure), I found a song that I really enjoyed hearing and something that I could move to using the poses in a free flowing way. I ALSO chose a song that was somewhat exciting and fun for an audience member. Yes bodybuilding is about YOU, but there is also an audience that you are "performing" in front of.
From being at both ends (meaning posing or watching others pose from the audience point of view), choose a piece of music that moves you. You can't please everyone with your choice of music but, you need to practice, practice, practice. To many don't and you can see that from the audience and the judges seats. If you practice, smile, have fun it will all come together.
I agree, I think the choice of music has to get the poser energized or pumped up--and it should also be appealing to the audience--something that grabs their attention and fits with nailing the poses you select.
The competition I'm entered in doesn't even give us the choice in music. They chose the music and you only have 30 seconds of posing. At least that is one thing less on my mind.

Thats interesting but I can see where the benefit is.
Too many routines are simply goofy and a waste of time.
Do you thing to cool music but leave the theatrics at home please.

No props or costumes either. Even the pro qualifiers have no costumes/props but they get 60 seconds and the choice of music.

remember the "pink tail" routine at the 2008 Mid Atlantic show Joe?
HA - I remember that VIVIDLY as well. All I could think was "Oh Cr*p - I'm having my family come to one of these things and if someone does something like that - I think I am going to die!! What makes people think that that is acceptable at any level. I still also remember seeing Joe's face as they guy left the stage. I honestly thought Joe was going to kill him
As the person who posed this question (no pun intended), may I ask what this "pink tail" incident is (or are the details too graphic to place on such a public domain?)

he basically dressed with a black top hat, a tie and a PINK TAIL in his bodybuilding routine. then he danced around the stage swinging the tail around....moving the tail in and out of his legs. it was like a strip show without taking off his clothes. it was inappropriate. but it was FUNNY!....but inappropriate for a bodybuilding show.
Oh - he did some other things with his tail that were not appropriate at all - either at a bbing show or anywhere else in general public - I'm not a prude - but was more embarrased than anything else
Ok, what I saw was him stroking his tail between his legs. There, I said it! LOL. In all seriousness, that was terrible and I did want to squash him. Just wrong.

OMG!! I remember that now! I thought I was going to have to gouge out my eyes with a spoon backstage!

It was pretty silly. One way to avoid that kind of scene is to state: "no props." I thought there were a number of silly props that distracted from a bodybuilding focus. I know NPC doesn't permit props.

And they didn't thorw him out??? Gazooks, what is the world coming to?
